There was a time
When I would stand between you and a falling tree
Arms outstretched with youthful arrogance
My body the only shield I thought to raise
Against a toppling forest
For you, I stopped the crash.
There was a time
When I would stand between you and a rising tide
Challenge the water with my planted feet
Say “go on then, drown me in your depths,
See what happens”
For you, I tamed the tide.
There was a time
When I would come to see a falling tree
But I could not leap between danger and you
I’d looked away for a moment
And now you were the oak.
There was a time
When I would come to see a rising tide
But I could not offer myself in your stead
I’d looked away for a moment
And now you were the waves.
