‘You Look Really Well’ They Say

‘You look really well’ they say when I’m partying with my friends- I’m exhausted and still recovering but if I cancel plans with friends again I’m not sure that I’ll even be a friend worth having.

‘You look really well’ they say when they see me in my best clothes with my hair and makeup done up to the nines- underneath I look haggered, there’s dark circles around my eyes and I’m covered in surgical scars.

‘You look really well’ they say when they see me laughing and joking with my friends- little do they know I live in fear of what dramatic thing my health will do next.

‘You look really well’ they say when they bump into me in the supermarket- they don’t know that this is the first time I’ve left the hospital in 7 weeks and I can barely cope with the demand of these basic social interactions.

‘You look really well’ they say when I’m on the beach in the summer walking about in my bikini- they don’t know what strength and courage it took this morning to fake the confidence to bear my scars to the world.

‘You look really well’ they say, they don’t actually give a damn they just know it’s a polite thing to say.

‘You look really well’ they say- even though I don’t feel it!
