A Magic Spell

Between breaths and sobs
Your name crosses my lips
Perfectly pronouncing every letter
Overly aware of the power they hold

She repeats that word; that curse
But it sounds so different on her lips
The letters are disjointed
She stumbles across its vowels

I don’t know why she doesn’t take her time
Caress each letter around her tongue
Treating them all like precious stones
Worshipping your name like a God

She handles it clumsily, carelessly
And I want to scream
She doesn’t understand its power
It falls flat out of her mouth

My life revolves around you
The delicate and perfect mix
Of vowels and consonants
Forming the spell I’m still under

But she says it all wrong
